Starbucks South Africa is set to open several more branches before the end of the year, starting in Pretoria at the end of the month – September.

Having been brought to SA by Taste Holdings six months ago, there are currently branches at Taste’s head office, Rosebank Mall, and Mall of Africa.

Taste Holdings’ CEO Carlo Gonzaga told Moneyweb that it will open its next branch in Menlyn Maine in Pretoria, on 21 September.

The CEO has said that the company is focusing on delivering a “quality” Starbucks experience and is in not going to add any “pressure” on itself to churn out more Starbucks stores for the time being.

Gonzaga told Moneyweb that […]

McDonald’s accused of overcharging and deceiving franchisees

McDonald’s accused of overcharging and deceiving franchisees

May 03 2017 07:19                  Erik Larson, Bloomberg

New York – McDonald’s should be investigated for gouging franchisees on rents and deceiving them about how the amounts are calculated, a labour union said in letters to two state attorneys general.

US franchisees paid the world’s biggest fast-food chain more than $3bn in rents last year, a rate of return on McDonald’s real-estate investments that’s as much as triple the industry average, the Service Employees International Union said on Tuesday in a statement. The high cost allegedly makes it harder for franchisees to pay living wages.

The “windfall” rents are calculated in a secretive process that violates state laws in California and Illinois, said the union, known as SEIU.

“We are confident in the legality and appropriateness of our financial relations with our […]

McDonald’s adds curly fries to its menu – in some stores

The company has over the last two years experimented with different products and made changes to how it serves and sources food

Twister Fries were reportedly first unveiled in 2015 McDonalds

Fast food chain McDonald’s has treated connoisseurs of the humble chip by adding curly fries to some of its menus.

Twister Fries were reportedly first unveiled in 2015 and proved so popular with customers that the company brought them back for a limited time in its outlets in Japan earlier this year.

The curly fries have now appeared on menus in Singapore and Philippines.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s told The Independent, however, that there were no plans to extend the offer to UK customers. The company has over the last two years experimented with different products and made changes to […]

McDonald’s has been forced to make a U-turn on battery eggs. Here’s how

McDonald’s has been forced to make a U-turn on battery eggs. Here’s how

May 2017            by Candes Keating

South Africans have been known to be an activist bunch – in recent times there have been a number of high profile campaigns, often with varying degrees of success. These include the #feesmustfall protests against high tuition fees on the country’s campuses, protests against toll roads and ongoing service delivery demonstrations.

But protesters – even successful ones – could learn a thing or two from a small, under-reported, but highly effective campaign against a powerful multinational fastfood chain. Yolanda Güse, a Master’s student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, lobbied support against the burger and fast food chain McDonald’s South Africa. And won.

It started with animal protection group Beauty without Cruelty South Africa. They informed their members through their monthly newsletters about McDonald’s cruelty […]

Key Elements of Success in the Fast Food Industry

Key Elements of Success in the Fast Food Industry

by Jagg Xaxx

Success in the fast food industry requires mastery of different parameters than fine dining. Customers who go to a fast food business are looking for speed, convenience and predictability rather than a memorable dining experience. Fast food entrepreneurs who understand this can master these elements of the business and perhaps make a profit.

Branding

McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s are examples of extremely successful fastfood branding. Their signs, logos and slogans are recognizable around the world. Fans of fast food like predictability, and they want to know exactly what they are going to get before they go through the doors, according to the website Customer Service Zone. By providing consistent, easily recognizable and simple branding, a business reassures customers that nothing has changed. Simple slogans that lodge themselves in the brain are repeated endlessly on television and radio commercials, ensuring that when […]

9 up-and-coming healthy fast food chains that should scare McDonald’s

9 up-and-coming healthy fast food chains that should scare McDonald’s

Leanna Garfield – Feb. 8, 2017

Legacy mega-brands like McDonald’s, KFC, and Burger King have dominated the fast food industry for decades. But within the last few years, many American consumers have shown a growing interest in healthier fast food that incorporates more low-calorie ingredients and fresh produce while remaining convenient and affordable.

In late 2016, top food executives from PepsiCo and Campbell Soup Company told Fortune that cleaner food is not just a trend, but a movement. And that shift is spilling over into the fast food market too, forcing legacy chains to try to keep up. In the last four years, Taco Bell has pledged to cut artificial ingredients and use cage-free eggs, and has introduced a lower-calorie menu. McDonald’s has  worked with dietitians, removed antibiotics from its chicken, and added more salads to its menu.

But new healthy fast food […]

Has Coffee Gotten Too Fancy?

By OLIVER STRAND       APRIL 10, 2017

At Locol, a fast-food chain in California, a cup of premium coffee costs just $1, or $1.50 with milk and sugar. CreditEmily Berl for The New York Times

LOS ANGELES — The $1 cup of coffee is divisive, as drinks go.

For some, it’s a staple of the American morning: a comforting routine, a good deal. Anything that costs more than $1 is needlessly expensive, a waste of money — the coffee from a deli, diner or doughnut cart is all you need to start the day. For others, the $1 cup is suspiciously cheap. Maybe it tastes bad, or its production does harm to the land and is unfair to laborers. If you have to pay more, then that is probably a reflection of a drink’s true cost.

Can the two viewpoints be reconciled? Is it possible for […]

Fast food trends that will continue into 2017

Fast food trends that will continue into 2017

January 10, 2017 by FASA Admin

According to QSR Magazine (www.qsrmagazine.com), 2016’s fast-food trends internationally could be summed up in three words:   Wacky. Creative. Simple. These trends will no doubt continue into 2017 with some tweaking and refining and hopefully some new ideas bearing fruit.

  • Mixing it up is the order of the day…. it’s called Mash-ups. Anything to attract attention, offer something different and make money.  In the US Burger King did it with Cheetos Chicken Fries, and Pizza Hut tried it with the Grilled Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza – the latter already made popular by Debonairs in South Africa.
  • Breakfast becomes the new lunch and all-day option with most fast food brands (and some restaurants) climbing onto this new income source to add to the bottom line.  From offering breakfast specials that include scrambled eggs on pizza to offering breakfast all […]
