We will close down KFC and McDonalds’ if we don’t get more teachers – Western Cape Cosas

2018-03-02 – Christina Pitt

Cape Town – The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has threatened to shut down businesses in the Cape Town CBD should the Western Cape Department of Education fail to appoint more teachers at township schools by Monday.
Cosas led a large group of high school pupils on a march to the provincial education department’s offices on Friday, after they were informed that a number of schools in Khayelitsha did not have enough teachers for certain subjects, specifically mathematics.

“We will close down KFC and McDonalds because it’s their friends’ businesses,” said Cosas chairperson Michael Mayalo during the protest outside the department’s offices.
“We can get enough attention and we will have enough learners.
“We are calling on our parents to boycott work on Monday and assist us with the goal of obtaining quality education.”

The organisation also demanded that Education MEC Debbie Schafer be removed from office.
“Cosas wants the MEC herself […]

Dalton KFC donates R45 000

2018-03-07 06:01

DALTON KFC staff handed over a R45 000 cheque to Vianney Children’s Home in Ndwedwe as a contribution to the home’s feeding scheme.

Every R2 that KFC customers donate to Add Hope, combined with KFC social-investment contributions, goes to sustainable feeding programmes to feed over 120 000 children at 25 national and 113 local beneficiaries.
Vianney Children’s Home is part of the local beneficiary programme, which sees KFC restaurants partnering with local charities to ensure that funds go to their communities.

Vianney Children’s Home was founded in 1962 as a non-profit organisation that provides temporary residence, a Child and Youth Care Programme and support for orphans and other vulnerable children and their families in the area.

Lethiwe Mazibuko, who runs the charity, said: “With a high unemployment rate and a lack of resources in the area, some parents cannot afford to feed or send their children to school. With Add Hope funding, the […]

KFC returns to UK supplier after chicken fiasco

Thanks to Tony Timm for sharing this great article.

2018-03-09 13:06

London – US fast-food chain KFC has re-employed its former delivery supplier in Britain after an embarrassing shortage of chicken forced the closure of hundreds of restaurants.
KFC announced on Thursday that Bidvest Logistics would supply 350, or more than one-third of its UK restaurants, but added that new partners DHL and QSL would be kept on board.
“Our focus remains on ensuring our customers can enjoy our chicken without further disruption,” a KFC spokesperson said in a statement.

“With that in mind, the decision has been taken in conjunction with QSL and DHL to revert the distribution contract for up to 350 of our restaurants in the north of the UK back to Bidvest Logistics.”
The spokesperson added that some 3% of KFC’s 900 restaurants remained shut, while suppliers were still struggling to deliver items such as salads and drinks to outlets that […]

Trump has reportedly changed his diet — and after a week of eating like him, I can see why it was necessary

Dennis Green , Business Insider US

• President Donald Trump has a notoriously bad diet full of fast food and high-calorie meals.
• Even the official physician to the president said that Trump “would benefit from a diet that is lower in fat and carbohydrates.”
• A new report from Bloomberg suggests that Trump has recently changed what he’s eating to be more healthy.
• I ate like Trump for a week and saw why his diet needed a change.

Much has been written and said about President Donald Trump’s diet.
Considering reports that his “major food groups” are McDonald’s, KFC, pizza, and Diet Coke, as well as one that says he tries to avoid non-chain restaurants out of fear of being poisoned, it’s fair to say Trump’s food choices are far from healthy.

A new report from Bloomberg suggests that Trump’s diet has completely changed after a health check-up by Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson found that the […]

We tried KFC’s new ‘mojito’ – and one ingredient was a bit overpowering

Timothy Rangongo , Business Insider SA

Business Insider South Africa tried out KFC’s latest offering, the Midnight Mojito Sparkling Krusher.
• Basically, KFC just replaced the Sprite in its original Virgin Mojito with Coke.
• In our view, not an improvement. Still refreshing, though.

KFC South Africa recently gave its Krusher product range an update with the addition of the ‘Midnight Mojito Sparkling Krusher’.

The fast-food chain first rolled out a limited range of the blended ice beverages about eight years ago with the Virgin Mojito Sparkling Krusher – an icy, carbonated beverage with a Sprite base, mixed with mint flavoured syrup, garnished with a lemon wedge and mint leaves. It has since expanded the Krusher flavours with yogurt berry, P.S. chocolate and Bakers lemon cream biscuits among others.

The latest offering returns to its roots – it’s an alternative to the Virgin Mojito Krusher. We were curious to taste it.

Ask Georgie: PnP under fire for Smart Shopper points

Our thanks to Tony Timm for once again sharing a most interesting article with us

When Pick n Pay introduced its rewards programme, Smart Shopper, in 2011, its success was so stunning it took the retailer by surprise.
For every R100 spent, shoppers would receive R1 back in cash-back points, which were initially valid for three years. On certain items, it offered double or triple points, or instant savings. It’s no surprise that Smart Shopper has been voted the country’s favourite rewards programme.

The impact on the bottom line forced the retailer to reassess its offering to its 10-million-plus card-holding customers, so last April, it halved the value: for every R200 spent, customers receive R1 in cash-back vouchers.
On January 1 this year, PnP introduced a new policy, expiring Smart Shopper points 12 months after they were earned.
The move’s not gone down well with many shoppers.

David Ramsay wrote to complain: “I have been an […]

Elon Musk lines up $55bn payday – the world’s biggest bonus

Another great share by Tony Timm – Thanks!!

Musk will become planet’s richest man if he turns Tesla into a $650bn business in a decade

Elon Musk, the founder and chief executive of electric car company Tesla, would smash all pay records and become the richest man in the world if an extraordinarily ambitious new incentive scheme pays out.
The 46-year-old entrepreneur, who is already a multi-billionaire, has agreed to work unpaid for the next 10 years – after which he would collect an unprecedented $55.8bn (£40bn) bonus if builds the 14-year-old business into a $650bn company within a decade.
If Musk achieves the hugely ambitious target it would be by far the biggest ever executive windfall.

“Elon will receive no guaranteed compensation of any kind – no salary, no cash bonuses, and no equity that vests by the passage of time,” the company said of the new pay plan. “Instead, Elon’s only compensation will […]

Toyota and Pizza Hut Team Up on Self-Driving Pizza-Delivery Vehicle

Shared by Russel Fineberg – Thanks!

At CES, the automaker unveiled a new autonomous van called the e-Palette.

Toyota unveiled a new electric self-driving vehicle concept at CES this week, and the automaker has a lot of ideas about how it might be used. One of them it’s already moving forward with, thanks to a newly annouced partnership with Pizza Hut, is pizza delivery.
Toyota plans to begin testing the vehicle, called the e-Palette, in the U.S. beginning in 2020. But early this year, it will join forces with Pizza Hut to learn more about pizza delivery and improve efficiency and safety. The two companies will soon begin testing technology and monitoring driver data in existing Pizza Hut delivery vehicles.

In the future, the e-Palette could not only be for delivering pizzas, according to Pizza Hut, but also making them along the way.

Disciplinary Hearings: When should external counsel be permitted?

Ivan Israelstam

Item 4 of the Code of Good Practice: Dismissal (The Code) contained in Schedule 8 of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) states that, when an enquiry is held into an employee’s alleged misconduct “The employee should be allowed …… the assistance of a trade union representative or fellow employee.”

It is on this basis that employers allow the accused to be represented by someone from inside the organisation. Employers have, on the other hand, normally disallowed external legal representatives to represent accused employees at disciplinary hearings.

In the case of MEC: Department of Finance, Economic Affairs and Tourism: Northern Province vs Schoon Godwilly Mahumani (Case number 478/03 SCA. Report by Dr Elize Strydom distributed 30 January 2005) the employee was refused the right to an external legal representative.
The employee went to the High Court to dispute this ruling. The court found that the ruling of the presiding officer of the disciplinary […]

Why is Corporate Governance Important?

By: Leo Sun

Corporate governance is the way a corporation polices itself. In short, it is a method of governing the company like a sovereign state, instating its own customs, policies and laws to its employees from the highest to the lowest levels. Corporate governance is intended to increase the accountability of your company and to avoid massive disasters before they occur. Failed energy giant Enron, and its bankrupt employees and shareholders, is a prime argument for the importance of solid corporate governance. Well-executed corporate governance should be similar to a police department’s internal affairs unit, weeding out and eliminating problems with extreme prejudice. A company can also hold meetings with internal members, such as shareholders and debtholders – as well as suppliers, customers and community leaders, to address the request and needs of the affected parties.

Principles of Corporate Governance
• Shareholder recognition is key to maintaining a company’s stock price. More often […]
